out-of-context remodels

It's so sad to see something like this – a very cute, sharp looking bungalow (on the outside), with a horribly anti-Craftsman bath and kitchen inside, which totally ruins the entire Arts & Crafts feeling of the entire place. Why spend all that money on a kitchen that is exactly the opposite of the style of the house? Successful remodels are always in the context of the house as a whole, and don't try to rebel against it.

  1. It was built in 1948. It probably didn’t have much craftsman feeling inside to begin with. However, still inappropriate.

  2. I have seen so many granite countertops in cottages and bungalows I could scream! But this kitchen doesn’t actually look like a total monstrosity. I’ve seen much, much worse in San Diego bungalows.
This isn’t an isolated instance, it’s the norm for house flippers — they tart up the kitchens with built-in espresso makers and the bathroom with whirlpool tubs, to justify the $600 thousand plus price tag. In upstate New York , there are thousands of charming pre-war houses –craftsman, dutch colonial, sears and other kits, that are deteriorating past the point of renovation because there’s no housing market here! So be careful what you wish for, California and Georgia, no?
