William Livingstone House, aka “Slumpy”

William Livingstone House

Pictured: demolished in 2007, the often-photographed William Livingstone House – a good example of Detroit's (and especially Brush Park's) long, slow, and ongoing architectural apocalypse. Incidentally, the house was the first commission by eventually very well known architect Albert Kahn. Photograph above is uncredited and was passed on to us by Fipi Lele; if you can tell us who shot it, please do in the comments below.

  1. More than likely the photo was shot by Sweet Juniper. He’s rather famous or perhaps infamous for his Detroit photos.

  2. That’s a sweet shot of Slumpy, which has always been iconic for me of what happens to good houses when you let them go to hell.
You’ve got a great blog – thanks for linking over to Michigan in Pictures!

  3. Quite a tragic photograph considering the state of neglect and now its complete disappearance. It seems odd that no one wanted to save the house from getting to this state in the first place.
